The theme of this novel is courage. Many characters portray this characteristic through out the novel in many different situations. Courage is to over come fears, over come yourself, and make the right choices no matter the outcome.
In Shiver one character that portrays this theme is Sam. Through out the novel is protects his loved ones, stands up for what he believes in, and over comes his weaknesses. When he was a child his parents tried to drown him in a bathtub, he was afraid of bath tubs ever since. Sam was going through the change and he needed to warm up to stop it. Grace took him into the bathroom and started running hot water and Sam couldn't do it. In the end he went through a hard time accepting it but he got into the bathtub.
