Define and Describe #3

The theme of this novel is courage. Many characters portray this characteristic through out the novel in many different situations. Courage is to over come fears, over come yourself, and make the right choices no matter the outcome.
In Shiver one character that portrays this theme is Sam. Through out the novel is protects his loved ones, stands up for what he believes in, and over comes his weaknesses. When he was a child his parents tried to drown him in a bathtub, he was afraid of bath tubs ever since. Sam was going through the change and he needed to warm up to stop it. Grace took him into the bathroom and started running hot water and Sam couldn't do it. In the end he went through a hard time accepting it but he got into the bathtub.

Identify #2

Five elements that are most important in a novel are:
                      1. Characters
                      2. Setting
                      3. Imagery
                      4. Plot
                      5. Suspense

The element "Characters" is the most important in my opinion cause certain characters draw me into the novel. The way the character looks, acts, thinks, and even speaks puts me in their shoes. I can connect with the characters and think like them. I feel what they feel and I can never put the book down. In my novel Shiver, their is a character names Sam. He is a werewolf, and is in love with Grace, a human. This winter is his last winter, and as the temperature drops, his muscles tighten and he knows he will change. the problem is if he will ever change back. Sam has lived a strange, dark, and lonely life. When he was a child his parents were abusive and he was an outsider. When he was bitten, his master, Beck, brought him in and treated him as a son. Sam has suffered loss, and pain. Certain experiences in his life is what draws him to Grace and that's what I find interesting. Sam and I have that in common. Characters all have different personalities and it  is even more unbelievable how an author can portray all those different personas in one novel.

First Post

In a good book, three qualities I look for is suspense, emotion, and clarity. The book should clearly describe setting, characters, and events. It help imagine the subject better and I can be drawn to the characters if they look a certain way. An example would be Damon Salvitor in The Vampire Diaries. Also, the book needs to have suspense. Suspense is the most important quality, it makes the reader keep reading on eager to know what happens next. Finally, emotion. Emotion helps readers connect to characters like Sam in The Perks of Being A Wallflower. It makes you feel sympathy, anger, hate, love, or even lust for example 50 Shades of Grey. Without emotion a book would just be.. bland.

At the moment I am reading Shiver by Maggie Steifvater. It has emotion, suspense, and clarity. I can picture the woods in Grace's backyard, the wolves she is obsessed over, and even Sam's fiery gold eyes. The guilt, innocence, and love you feel from Grace makes you want to befriend her. Sam's strength, trust, and lust makes you love him even more. There is Suspense around every corner and I always have trouble putting the book down.
